Question

when riding the MAX (portland's public transportation) home lastweek, you overheard someone say to his girlfirned, 'the powerratings printed on all my applicances really depend on theirresistance. the more resistance i have, the less current i draw andthe less power i use. therefore if i leave all my appliances on,the resistances will be additive. with a higher total resistancei'll draw less current. then, since P=IV, i'll use less power andsabe on my electricity bills!'.

why is this further proof not to trust a stranger's physicsreasoning? EXPLAIN in detail

Explanation / Answer

Appliance are connected in parallel to eachother (not in series where resistance adds up). In parallel, inverse of resistance add up thereby reducing overall or effectiveresistance. Since resistance is lowered, more current will bedrawn, and hence more electricity bill.
