Question
Write out the beta oxidation pathway of Co-A ester of acid (DPA) (c225 Delta cis-7,10.13,16.19) You must draw the structure, write the enzyme name and additional products produced at each seep! You do not have to name the lipid structures CLEARLY MARK (AND COUNT) EACH ROUND OF BETA OXIDATION In a table, show the results (name and amount of products produced) of each round of beta oxidation and give totals. Calculate the ATP that is produced when the fatty acyl Co A is oxidized to CO_2 and H_2 O, What is the effect of double bonds at odd carbons on the energy yield? What is the effect of double bonds at even carbons on the energy yield? Apply what you just learned: You have a C12 fatty acyl-CoA. what are you products of beta oxidation (remember you could continue on to calculate ATP yield).Explanation / Answer
Beta oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids:
Beta oxidation of unsaturated even fatty acids is also produce Acetyl CoA as end product. The energy yeild is also same. But Beta oxidation of unsaturated even fatty acids requires two additional enzymes they are enoyl CoA isomerase and 2, 4 dienoylCoA reductase.
Beta oxidation of odd chain fatty acids:
In odd chain fatty acids Beta oxidation can also produce Acetyl CoA. But the last 3 carbons are released as PropinylCoA during the final round. Later PropinylCoA convert into SuccinylCoA.
According to the Beta oxidation I learned both saturated fatty acids and unsaturated fatty acids can produce equal amount of energy. The main product produced in the Beta oxidation is Acetyl CoA.
But in odd chain fatty acids PropinylCoA (last 3 carbons) is produced at last step.
Beta oxidation of fatty acids:
Number of ATP's produced per rounds of Beta oxidation = 5 (1 NADH + 1 FADH2)
Number of ATP's produced per rounds from Acetyl CoA via TCA cycle = 12
A. Beta oxidation of Docosapentaenoic acid:
Formula - C22H34O2
Number of rounds of Beta oxidation = 10
Number of Acetyl CoA produced = 11
ATP produced in Beta oxidation- 10 X 5 = 50
ATP produced by Acetyl CoA in TCA cycle - 11 X 12 = 132
50 + 132 = 182
For activation of docosapentaenoic acid requires 2 ATP's is required,
So 182 ATP - 2 ATP = 180 ATP is produced from 1 docosapentaenoic acid.
B. Beta oxidation of lauric acid:
Formula - C12H24O2
Number of rounds of Beta oxidation = 5
Number of Acetyl CoA produced = 6
ATP produced in Beta oxidation- 5 X 5 = 25
ATP produced by Acetyl CoA in TCA cycle - 6 X 12 = 72
25 + 72 = 97
For activation of lauric acid requires 2 ATP's is required.
So 97 ATP - 2 ATP = 95 ATP is produced from 1 lauric acid.
