Question

To monitor the breathing of a hospital patient, a thin belt is girded around the patient's chest as in the figure below. The belt is a 240-turn coil. When the patient inhales, the area encircled by the coil increases by 45.0 cm2. The magnitude of Earth's magnetic field is 50.0 ?? and makes an angle of 29.0° with the plane of the coil. Assuming a patient takes 1.60 s to inhale, find the magnitude of the average induced emf in the coil during that time El-1.636e-7 X Your response differs significantly from the correct answer. Explanation / Answer

Given,

Number of turns, N = 240

Magnetic field, B = 50.0 uT

Area, A = 45 cm^2

Angle normal to the plane of the coil is

Theta ' = 90 - 29 = 61 degree

average induced emf, e = d phi/ dt

= N BA cos theta / dt

= 240 * 50*10^-6 * 45 *10^-4 cos (61) / 1.60

= 16.36*10^-6 V = 16.36 uV (Ans)
