Question

A simple pendulum consists of a small object of mass 3.1 kg hanging at the end of a 2.0 m long light stringthat is connected to a pivot point. (a) Calculate the magnitude of the torque (dueto the force of gravity) about this pivot point when the stringmakes a 6.5°angle with the vertical.
1 N·m

(b) Does the torque increase or decrease as the angle increase?
2 increase
decrease

Explanation / Answer

Given : .               Mass of the object (m) = 3.1 kg .                Lengthof the string (r)   = 2.0 m . (a)    We know that : .              Torque () = F r sin .                                = ( m g ) * rsin              ( Here F = Force due to gravity ) .                                = ( 3.1 kg * 9.8 m /s2 * 2.0 *sin6.5 )   = 6.878 N - m . (c)    From the above equation , .         Force isdirectly proportioanl to sin .         Hence as the angleincreases, torque also increases. . Hope this hleps u!
