Question

Light with wavelength lambda = 600 nm is incident on two very narrow slits separated by a distance d. An interference pattern is observed on a screen that is a distance 2.5 meters away from the slits. The third dark fringe to the left of the central maximum is found to be 2.0 mm away. Find d. Explain clearly and completely wy a dark fring appears on the screen. Do not use the pharse "destructive interference" in your answer. Suppose that one of the slits in the experimental set up made slightly wider so that more light gets through that slit than the other slit. The locations of the centers of the 2 slits remain the same, Describe clearly how the interference pattern will change, if at all? Explain your reasoning.

Explanation / Answer

wavelength = 600 nm = 600 * 10 ^ -9 m distance of the sceen from slits  D = 2.5 m third bright fringe distance on screen y = 2 mm = 2 * 10^ -3 m we know for third fringe y = 2.5                                         = 2.5 D / d from this slit separation d = 2.5 D / y                                       = 1.875 * 10 ^ -3 m
