NUMBER THEORY The enrollment in a class consists of sophomores, juniors, and backward seniors. If each sophomore contributes $1.25, each junior $.90 and each senior $.50, the instructor will have a fund of $25. There are 26 students. How many of each? The enrollment in a class consists of sophomores, juniors, and backward seniors. If each sophomore contributes $1.25, each junior $.90 and each senior $.50, the instructor will have a fund of $25. There are 26 students. How many of each?Explanation / Answer
Number of sophomore students = x
Number of junior students = y
Number of senior students = 26 - x - y
=> 25 = 1.25x + 0.9y + 0.5( 26 - x - y )
=> 25 = 0.75x + 0.4y + 13
=> 12 = 0.75x + 0.4y
We need to find integral values of x and y to satisfy the above equation.By Hit and Trial we get
=> y = 8 , x = 15 and 26 - x - y = 3
