Question

1. The following figure shows the reinforcing detail for a typical two-way flat-slab.* (a) Are there distribution bars in the following drawing? Why? (b) Explain the function of the bar marked 1 and 14, respectively. - (c) Explain the difference between "stg" and "alt" in bar designation. (d) How many total number of bars marked 14? How are the bars distributed on the slab? (e) Explain the meanings of "Cover T1-30, BI-25. PLAN Figure 1. Reinforcing detail for a two-way flat -slab-

Explanation / Answer

1. Yes we can clearly see in cross section A-A those bars perpendicular to plan are distribution bar i.e. those which are going from line 8 to line 9 . Distribution bar are those which cover longer span of two way slab. They are provided to resist the shear stress, cracks developed in the longer span. We place the distribution bars perpendicularly on top of the main bars. We use lesser dimension since it is only to resist the cracks developed due to shear stress on top of the slab.

2. Function of bar 1: They are bottom tension reinforcement bar. which will resist positive moment. Function of bar 14:To resist the negative moment at a discontinuous edge depending on the degree of fixity at the edge of the slab, top tension reinforcement bars are provided.

3. stg : means staggered that means not in one line. We should not lap all bars together at the same location. It creates a weak zone. To overcome this, half of the bars are lapped at one location (every other bar), the rest are lapped a little further along alt : means alternate i.e one by one. if one is lapped at a position then third is lapped at same position.

4. 9 no. of bars are marked 14. They are distribued 3 in left end corner and 6 at right continuous section.

5. For T1 top bar cover is 30 and for B1 bottom bar cover is 25 and for left end where slab ends cover is 40mm.
