Question
Answer the following questions in a maximum of 5 lines of text (5 pts each) a. If you were to instantaneously extract a volume of soil from the capillary fringe, as it is, would it 3. drip water or not? Why? b. Physically, why is it that when the soil is fully saturated, infiltration tends towards Ksat? (hint: consider the setup for Problem 2, but with a depth of ponded water tending to zero) c. In which situation can you have upwards vertical motion of water in the unsaturated zone of the soil? Which forces are involved in this? d. Can you have groundwater flow when the water table is absolutely flat? Which forces are involved in groundwater flows, in the case of unconfined (or water tabie) aquifers? e. Why is it that the actual velocity at which water flows in the ground is typically 2 to 3 times larger than the velocity in Darcy's equation?Explanation / Answer
a) yes! because adding water will reduce negative pore-water pressure.
b)
because, if soil is fully saturated, there is no pores filled with air and further no water will trap by pores. hence k becomes ksat
c) if there ia artesian pressure at bottom of soil layer such that pressure at bottom is more then top then upward motion will happen.
d) if groundwater is flat then probably no flow will be there. in case of aquifers head difference and artesian pressure cause flow.
