Question

A reservoir located in Texas supports a viable put-and-take trout fisheries in its downstream tailwaters (tailrace). The dam has the capability of withdrawing water from ports at 5 locations (at elevations of 180.00, 150.00, 120.00, 80.00, and 15.00 m). For survival of the trout, the recommended release temperature is less than 21.2 o C and a lethal temperature is 25 o C. In addition, the minimum dissolved oxygen concentration for trout survival is 5 mg/L. There is an established minimum release of 250 cfs and the withdrawal can be from a single port or distributed over multiple ports. You have been asked to use the selective withdrawal model (in readings folder) to develop 4 alternative outflow distributions that meet these criteria. Attach a copy of the output comparison table and a graphical plot of your “best recommended” alternative.

Explanation / Answer

k = 0.22 m/d , h1 = 20.1 m , h2 = 1.5 m

L = 128 m

q' = K/2 * [h12 - h22 / L]

= 0.22/2 * [20.12 - 1.52 / 128] * 200 m wide

= 69.05 m3/d
