Question
5. [Problem 7-H. (original)] Most of the sanitary sewers in the city of Cocoa Beach are lower in elevation than the wastewater treatment plant. The city uses "lift stations" to collect wastewater from those sewer pipes and pump the water to pipes at higher elevation that can drain by gravity to the wastewater treatment plant. During heavy rainfalls (such as experienced during a hurricane) the lift stations flood and wastewater washes into the storm drains discharging directly into the Indian River Lagoon. This may represent the largest input of contaminants to the Lagoon. Suggest two "actions" that might be taken to reduce the impact of this problemExplanation / Answer
There are two suggestions to reduce the impact of the problem:
1. A new canal can be constructed for diverting the wastewater in the other direction which will not contaminate Indian river lagoon.
2. Though it will take some time,it may be feasible to construct a new lift station that would collect the waste water from the sewer pipes and pump the water to pipes at a even more higher elevation than the previous pipes.
