Question

I need help undersatnding how to design a concrete two way slab and the concrete walls underneath that support it. Provided is an example with the red outline being the concrete walls and the openeing where a beam will be placed. Can you please show me how, calculations and explanations, detailed as possible how they are designed from beginning to end of the rebar reinforcing. The loading for the slab would be about 100 psf since its a slab at a pool.

Explanation / Answer

Steps involved in two way slab design -

1) Assume a thickness for the reinforced concrete two way slab.

2) Compute the depth of the web, which is equal to the total depth of the reinforced concrete two-way slab and beam assembly minus the assumed thickness of the two way slab.

3) Calculate the width of the two way slab that will be used in the moment of inertia calculation as per ACI Code 318-11 Section 13.2.4.

4) Find the centroid of the T-section which consists of the beam and a portion of the two-way slab.

5) Compute the gross moment of inertia of the T-section which consists of the beam and a portion of the two-way slab.

6) Compute the moment of inertia of the two way slab in the long direction. After doing this, the ratio of the flexural rigidity of the two-way slab and beam to flexural rigidity of the slab in the long direction is found per ACI Code 318-11, Section 13.6.1.6, and Equation 13-3.

7) Compute the moment of inertia of the two way slab in the short direction. After doing this, the ratio of the flexural rigidity of the two-way slab and beam to flexural rigidity of the slab in the short direction is found per ACI Code 318-11, Section 13.6.1.6, and Equation 13-3.

8) Calculate the average of the flexural rigidity ratios that were calculated in the previous two steps.

9) Find the ratio of the long to short clear span for the two-way slab panels.

10) Determine the minimum required thickness of the two-way slab panels per ACI Code 318-11, Section 9.5.3.3, and Equation 9-13
