Explanation / Answer

The building of basement below the existing warehouse requires lot of preliminary activities to be carried out.The steps includes -

1) All around the warehouse temporary concrete wall to be constructed till the proposed basement bottom level. This will prevent the soil supporting the exisiting foundation and the warehouse from getting weak.

2) Further excavation to be carried out and ensure to provide proper drainage system since water table will rise during excavations.

2) All the foundations need to be strengthened before further proceeding with excavation.

3)Mass concrete underpinning is the oldest method to strengthen the foundations to support the whole structure. Here another set of foundations are created below the existing foundation. This is usually done by digging boxex and filling them with concrete.

4)Alternate method will beam and base underpinning. Here reinforced concrete beam supported by concrete base is built underneath the existing structure to strngthen the structure.

5) Once the existing structure is strengthened futher excavations are done completely till the level needed for basment construction.

6) Once excavation is completed the next activites of construction to be carried out.

7) A concrete slab to be constructed above the basement.

8) After the slab work the basement floor and wall can be constructed.

9)For constructing timber floor, at that location a concrete bed to be placed first which act as a sub floor.

10) Above the sub floor a small slepper wall has to be placed.

11) A wall plate is attached above the slepper wall on which the timber floor joist rests.

12) A damp proof course separates the wall plate and sleeper wall which will prevent decaying of timber.
