Question

4 f. Use the water balance equation (Eq. 1) to estimate how much the water level in the aquifer is rising or falling each year. flux estimates are arbitrary g with two other estimates which are: (1) the water authority pumps about 37,000 acre- feet per year from its well fields, and (2) mountain front recharge to the aquifer is about 28,000 acre-feet per year. Again, remember to account for porosity when you estimate how much the water table falls. 4g What if pumping were 120,000 acre-feet per year (the peak level in the late 1980’s)? 4h. Finally, estimate a mean residence time for the water in basin aquifer. Use the lower pumping rate from 4f for calculating the total fluxes. Average porosity is about 22%.

Explanation / Answer

Hi,

Plz post if any difficulites.

Thanks.

4.f] Q pump = 37000 acre-feet per year ( negative)

Q recharge to the aquifer = 28000 acre-feet per year ( positive)

Therefore Qnet excluding porosity = 37000-28000 = 9000 acre-feet per year (Negative hence fall)

Porosity = 22%

Therefore Q net = 9000 * [1-0.22] = 7020 acre-feet per year (fall)

4 g] If Q pump = 120000 then,

Q net = [120000 - 28000] * [1-0.22]

Q net = 71760 acre-feet per year ( negative)
