You've been asked to design a critical structural connecting joint for a high speed, high impact amusement park ride. Your supervisor tells you that the most important aspects of this design are that while the material that you choose must have both high strength and high toughness, toughness is by far the most important property. You find that you have a choice between two materials whose stress/strain curves are shown in Diagram A. Explain to your co-workers which material you would select and why you think this option is suitable, specifically with regards to how each of the materials will behave whilst the ride is in operation. Your co-worker is from the marketing department, so you will probably have to explain some of the basic concepts and terminology as well.

Explanation / Answer

Since toughness is the most important property, the material that should be used is material 2. This is because toughness is the energy absorbing capacity of a material before it ruptures. Energy absorbing capacity can be determined from the area under the stress strain curve. Higher the area ,more tge energy absorbing capacity and hence more the toughness of the material.
