Question

Hydrology quesrion!!

For a water supply reservoir, the following data on precipitation (rainfall) P, evaporation E, and runoff Q are given in m^3 for the months January to December. Assume the initial storage at the beginning of January as 250 m^3. (i) Calculate the change in storage (in m^3) for each month. (ii) At the end of which month is the amount of water stored in the reservoir largest and when is the smallest amount of water present in the storage? (iii) What is the difference (in m^3) in the amount of water stored in the reservoir between these two extremes? (ANSWERS: (Largest storage is 516 m^3 at the end of April and the smallest is 235 m^3 at the end of July: The difference is 281 m^3))

Explanation / Answer

i) Change in storage for each month = P-E-Q

january - 254-5-150 = 99m3

february - 209-25-110 = 74m3

march - 169-30-80 = 59m3

april - 89-50-5 = 34m3

may - 49-80 = -31m3

june - 0-100 = -100m3

july - 0-150 = -150m3

august - 74-70 = 4m3

september - 104-60 = 44m3

october - 94-20-10 = 64m3

november - 109-10-15 = 84m3

december - 194-5-120 = 69m3

ii)maximum storage will be add the end of April = 250+99+74+59+34 = 516m3

smallest amount of storage is at the end of July = 516-31-100-150 = 235m3

iii)difference between two extremes = 516-235 = 281m3
