Question

Hydrology help....kinda stuck thank you for looking! note: SWE is snow water equivalent

1)calculate the snow density (g/cm^3) and cold content (j/m^2) for march 2

2)calculate the snow density (g/cm^3) and cold content (j/m^2) for march 17

3) How much energy must be added to the snowpack on each date to intiate the water output phase (j/m^2)?

date variable measured station1 2 3 4 5 march 2 snowpack depth (cm) 92 94 105 93 96 SWE (cm) 29 30 33 29 32 snow temperature (c) -6 -5 -6 -6 -6 march 17 snow pack depth (cm) 88 89 102 88 91 SWE (cm) 35 36 40 35 37 Snow temperature (c) -2 -2 -3 -2 -3

Explanation / Answer

SWE / DENTISTY = SNOW DEPTH

1) For first part density, for station 1 , 29/ dentisty = 92

so density = 29/ 92 = 0.315 . similary we can calculate for all the station and for both the dates.

for cold content the formula is

cold content = - heat capacity *density * SWE*( temp of snow - melting temperature)

= - 2102 * 0.315*29*(-6-0)

= 115210 is the answer

similarly we can calculate for each station

output phase is when the water will start to percolate form the region after melting is given by

Qm3 = (hm - h wert ). density . lamda.
