Question

I am wondering if i could have some help classifying a metal sample that i am trying to identify? I believe my sample is either A36 or 1118 steel, but i have trouble finding a good source where i can scroll through multiple types of metal and match properties. some of my tested properties are,

E is around 29 million psi

UTS: 78000PSI

Density: .28 lb/in3... 7.77 g/cm3

Rockwell HRG hardness: 62.1

Brinell Hardness: 149

I attached x20 and x100 micrographs and also my stress strain curve. the reason i feel like i can't be set on A36 is because this sample elongated to above 35%

Explanation / Answer

Yes, you metal is A36 According to a book of Microstructur properties by P K mehta, Hardness Brinell is simmilar to the 149 and the density is 7800 kg/m^3.

You can also refer to MATERIAL BOOK FOR STEEL DESIGN, and Steel construction manual , by American institute of steel construction
