Question
it would be a great help if you can do in mathcad. 1) A timber pile will supp a 7okips a dal. 15kips moment design be shear and 10kip.ft allowable compressive strength of the pile is 1000 psi and pile diameters at head and toe of pile to 14n and Tin, respectively. Consider pile lengths of 50ft and maximum moment at below ground a) What is axial stress due to the axial load only at the depth of maximum moment? b) Is the pile capacity adequate to support the axial load and the moment combination? c) is the pile capacity adequate to support the shear load?
Explanation / Answer
a) Axial Load = 70kips
Shear Load = 15 kips
Moment = 10 kips-ft
Allowable compressive strength = 1000pis = 1 kip/sqaure inch
Now as per dividendo rule of mathematics -
Diameter of pile at maximum moment point =
: Total Length of pile = 50ft
Diameter changes from 14 inches to 7 inches
so, 50 ft in 7 inches
10 ft for = 7/50 * 10 = 1.4 inches covers
So Diameter of pile at 10ft = 14 inch - 1.4 inch = 12.6 inches
Now Axial Stress = Axial Load / Cross sectional Area = 70 / pile area = 70/124.68 = 0.56 kips/square inch < 1 kips/square inch
Hence Okay
