Question
"Gold, which has a density of 19.32 g/cm3, is the most ductile metal and can be pressed into a thin leaf or drawn out into a long fiber. (a) If a sample of gold with a mass of 2.023 g, is pressed into a leaf of 3.268 µm thickness, what is the area (in m2) of the leaf? (b) If, instead, the gold is drawn out into a cylindrical fiber of radius 2.600 µm, what is the length (in m) of the fiber?"For a., I set up an equation like this :
1932g / 1m^3 = 2.023g / m^2 * .000003268m, solved for m^2, and got 340.21 m^2, but the online homework said that this was incorrect.
For b, I set up another equation like this :
1932g / 1m^3 = 2.023g / (pi * 0.0000026^2 * h), solved for h, and got 49305139.52 m, but this was also marked as wrong.
Can you please tell me what I have been doing wrong with these problems?
Explanation / Answer
your conversion from g/cm3 to g/m3 is incorrect. 19.32g/cm3=19.32e4 g/m3 hats why you are wrong.
