Question

A woman and her dog are out for a morning run to the river, which is located 4.75 km away. The woman runs at 2.74 m/s in a straight line. The dog is unleashed and runs back and forth at 5.43 m/s between his owner and the river, until she reaches the river. What is the total distance run by the dog (in meters)?

I tried this once, got 1193 meters for the dog, when I was doing it, I got the dog running back and forth 5 times, at smaller distances each time, I was apparently wrong, can someone tell me where I went wrong please.

Explanation / Answer

Given Distance , s = 4.75 *10^3 m Vw = 2.74 m/s Vd = 5.43 m/s The time taken by the woman is t = 4.75 *10^3 m/2.74 m/s t = 1.73 * 10^3 s ------------------------------------------------------------------- The total distance travelled by the dog in that time is s' = Vd * t = 5.43 m/s * 1.73 *10^3 s s' = 9.4 km
