Question
Imagine you are on the panel of professors and teachers who grade AP Biology exams. Before you grade the exams, your team needs to construct an answer key that will be utilized to assess student responses. Your role is to provide the "target responses" that will be used by other members of the team in grading student responses to questions about the relationship between animal form and function. Work in groups of four to answer the questions below, which will then be utilized as a key to grade students' answers. Alveoli of mammalian lungs are composed of simple squamous epithelial cells. Explain how this structure correlates with the primary function of the alveoli.Explanation / Answer
The walls of the alveoli are only one cell thick; made up of simple squamous epithelial cells; which makes the exchange surface very thin i.e. the diffusion distance across which gases have to move is shortened. Further, each alveolus is surrounded by blood capillaries which ensure a good blood supply.
