Question
a)The plane of a rectangular coil, 2.7 cm by 10.8 cm, is perpendicular to the direction of a uniform magnetic field B. If the coil has 87 turns and a total resistance of 9, at what rate must the magnitude of B change to induce a current of 0.09 A in the
windings of the coil? Answer in units of T/s.
b)A plane loop of wire of area A is placed in a region where the magnetic field is perpendicular to the plane. The magnitude of B varies in time according to the expression B = B0 e^(-at). That is, at t = 0 the field is B0, and for t > 0, the field decreases exponentially in time. Find the induced emf, E, in the loop as a function of time.
Explanation / Answer
Given that Area of the rectangular coil is A = 2.7 cm * 10.8 cm
= 29.1 *10^-4 m^2
Number of turns is N = 87
resistance R = 9 ohms
induced current is i = 0.09 A
d B /dt = N i R^2 / A
= 87 * 0.09* ( 9 )^2 / 29.1 *10^-4
= 2.175*10
