Question

1. A stunt man is suppose to perform a stunt in which he must jump from the flat rooftop of one building to the floor of another located 5.0m below the level f the first one. The horizontal separation between the building is 10m. The stunt man can bring himself to a speed of 7.0m/s and he intends to jump so that his initial velocity is horizontal. Should he jump? base answer on a quantitative assessment, assuming that the stunt man can be treated as a massive point particle and the air resistance is negligible.

Explanation / Answer

t=sqrt(5/4.9)=1.01015 s vo=vx=vox=7 m/s x=vox/1.01015=6.93 m he should not jump, he will hit the side of the building vyfinal=-9.8*1.01015=-9.9m/s sqrt(7^2+9.9^2)=12.12 m/s=vfinal he will hit the wall at 12.12 m/s ouch!!
