Question
A diverging lens has a focal length of 20.0 cm. Use graph paper to construct accurate ray diagrams for object distances of (a) 40.0 cm and (b) 10.0 cm. In each case determine the location of the image from the diagram and the image magnification, and state whether the image is upright or inverted.(c) Estimate the magnitude of uncertainty in locating the points in the graph. Are your answers and the uncertainty consistent with what you would find solving algebraically? (Do this on paper. Your instructor may ask you to turn in this work.)
Explanation / Answer
The focal length of the diverging lens is f = 20 cm The object distances are u = 40 cm and u1 = 10 cm Let the image distances for the two objects distances be v and v1 respectively We know from the relation (1/f) = (1/u) + (1/v) or (1/v) = (1/f) - (1/u) where f = -20 cm (for diverging lens) Similarly, (1/v1) = (1/f) - (1/u1) The image magnification is M = (v/u) and M1 = (v1/u1) For converging lenses only virtual images can be formed.
