Question

A 930 kg car is pulling a 275 kg trailer. Together, the car and trailer have an acceleration of 2.18 m/s2 in the forward direction. Neglecting frictional forces on the trailer, determine the following (including sign).
(a) the net force on the car
_______________________ N

(b) the net force on the trailer
________________________ N

(c) the force exerted by the trailer on the car
_________________________ N

(d) the resultant force exerted by the car on the road

magnitude__________________N

direction____________________° (counterclockwise from the positive x axis)

Explanation / Answer

Ft = ma = 275(2.18) = 599.5 N positive/ left hand direction. c) the force exerted on the trailer by the car is the same force necessary to pull the trailer since every action has an equal and opposite force. Ft=599.5 N negative/ right hand direction since it is in the opposite direction. d) the net force to pull the car is 2027.4 N and the force of gravity is Fg = ma = (930) 9.8 = 9114 N downward so the resultant force the car exerts on the road is F = (9114^2+2027.4^2) = (87175346.76) = 9336.773 N the direction is found by tan = Fg/Fc tan = 9114/2027.4 tan = 4.495   = 257.459 degrees measured from the positive x axis
