Question

This question was a concept question on my physics test. "Two identical stones are dropped from rest and feel no airresistance as they fall. Stone A is dropped from height h, andstone B is dropped from height 2h. If stone A takes time t to reachthe ground, Stone b will take time: a. 2t b. t/2 c. 4t d. t/sqrt(2) e. sqrt(2)*t"
I am not understanding the concept. I was told that the answeris e but i need to explain why in order to get credit. couldsomeone please explain why that is the answer? thank you "Two identical stones are dropped from rest and feel no airresistance as they fall. Explanation / Answer

From Newton's Laws of motion: s = ut + (1/2)at2 where s = distance travelled            u= initial velocity            a= acceleratiob             t= time taken For the first stone, the equation will be       h = ut +(1/2)at2   (1) => h=(1/2)gt2       (1)       Since u = 0 and a = g(acceleration due to gravity) Similarly for the second stone, the equation will be    2h = ut +(1/2)aT2    => 2h=(1/2)gT2       (2) Divide (2) by (1)    2h/h = T2/t2    T = sqrt(2)*t      Divide (2) by (1)    2h/h = T2/t2    T = sqrt(2)*t
