Question
Two masses are on a frictionless horizontal surface movingwith 2 perpendicular directions (m1=m & m2=3m). After thecollision the m1 mass stops. a) What is the velocity of mass m2 after the collision, ifbefore the collision of the masses v1=5m/s and v2=3m/s. b)How does the direction of the movement of the second masschanges? Two masses are on a frictionless horizontal surface movingwith 2 perpendicular directions (m1=m & m2=3m). After thecollision the m1 mass stops. a) What is the velocity of mass m2 after the collision, ifbefore the collision of the masses v1=5m/s and v2=3m/s. b)How does the direction of the movement of the second masschanges?Explanation / Answer
before the collision,velocity of masses v1=5m/s ,v2=3m/s
Since both are moving with perpendiculardirection , Let v1 =5 i and v2 =3 j ,
After collision velocity of masses v1' =0, From conservation of momentum beforecollision & after collision
m1 * v1 +m2 *v2 = m1 *v1' +m2 *v2' ; from this equation , 5m * i + 9m * j =0+ 3m *v2'
=) v2' = 5/3 *i + 3 *j m/s . =Velocity of masses m2after collision .
=) Speed of masses m2 after collision = Sqrt ( 25/9 +9) =sqrt(106) /3 = 3.432 m/sec........Answer
B.) Direction of movement of Second masses changes dueto changes in momentum Beacuse Momentum is also a vector quantities. .thats why direction gets changes to conserve the momentum asshows in the above equation....
