Question

If 1 mol of a fatty acyl-CoA containing 20 carbon atoms undergoes three rounds of -oxidation, how many mol of ATP are produced from the complete aerobic catabolism of the products of these three rounds? Assume that re-oxidation of NADH via the electron transport chain yields the equivalent of 3 ATP, and that re-oxidation of FADH2 yields 2 ATP. (The remaining acyl-CoA is NOT catabolized further.)

A.) 51 ATP B.) 46 ATP C.) 44 ATP D.) 165 ATP E.) 49 ATP

Is HMG-CoA reductase activated, inhibited, or unaffected in response to a glucagon signal?

A.) Unaffected B.) Activated C.) Inhibited

Is hormone-sensitive lipase activated, inhibited, or unaffected in response to a glucagon signal?

A.) Unaffected B.) Activated C.) Inhibited

Explanation / Answer

1Ans:

Fatty acylcoA containing 20 carbons. Acetyl group of the acetyl coA is formed by two carbons, we should divide the number of carbons in the acyl group between two.

In each beta-oxidation round an Acetyl coA is released and NADH2+FADH2 are produced.

1st round:

produce one acyl coA of 18 carbons and one acetyl coA +NADH2+FADH2

2nd round:

produce one acyl coA of 16 carbons and one acetyl coA +NADH2+FADH2

3rd round:

produce one acyl coA of 14 carbons and one acetyl coA +NADH2+FADH2

Every acetyl coA yields 1NADH2+1FADH2+1GTP(ATP)

3 acetyl coAx 10ATP/AcetylcoA in the krebs cycle:30ATP

after 3 rounds:30ATP+3NADH2+3FADH2+3GTP

30ATP+9ATP+6ATP+3ATP=48ATP

Take 2 ATP that were used for the activation of fatty acid.

So after the 3rd round of 20carbon acyl coA produce net ATPs are 46ATPs

answer is B. 46 ATP

2Ans:

HMG-coA reductase inhibited in response to a glucagon signal

so the answer is C). inhibited

3Ans: Is hormone-sensitive lipase activated in response to a glucagon signal.

so the answer is B). Activated
