Question

The allowed energies of a simple atom are 0.00eV , 4.31eV ,and 6.60eV . What wavelengths appear in the atom'semission spectrum?
What wavelengths appear in the atom's absorption spectrum? f=Ephoton/h is how I get the frequency and then I use the cwhich is = to the speed of light to get c/f which gives me lamda ormy wavelength but every time I do that I get 188nm, 288nm and 0 butI those arent the right answers so Im lost as too what Im doingwrong or missing. Explanation / Answer

You need to use the energy difference between the energy levels. So, from 0 to 4.31 we get 4.31 eV, from 0 to 6.6 we get 6.6 eV, andfrom 4.31 to 6.6 we get 2.29 eV. So, the two non-zero wavelengths you have should be correct since you happened to use the right energies, but for the last one, you need to use 2.29 eV as your energy. 2.29 / (4.136*10-15) = 5.537 * 10-14 3.0 * 108 / (5.537 * 10-14) = 5.42 *10-7m = 542 nm
