Question

A 66.0 kg astronaut is stranded at a distance of 12.0m from hisship in free space. In order to get back to the ship, he throws a0.50 kg piece of equipment with a speed of 4.0 m/s directly awayfrom the space ship. How long will it take the astronaut to reachthe ship?

Explanation / Answer

mass of astronaut m = 66 kg

distance S= 12 m

Mass of equipment M = 0.5 kg

Speed of equipment V = 4 m / s

From law of conservation of momentum , speed of astronaut v= MV / m

                        v = 0.0303 m / s

Therefore required time   t = S / v

                                          = 396 s
