Question

The question is: In a common but dangerous prank, a chair is pulledaway as a person is moving downward to sit on it, causing thevictim to land hard on the floor. Suppose the victim falls by 0.70m, the mass that moves downward is 79.0 kg, and the collision onthe floor lasts 0.0780 s. What are the magnitudes of the(a) impulse and (b) average forceacting on the victim from the floor during the collision?

I understand how to do part (b) once I get part (a) but I can'tseem to figure out how to calculate impulse in this situation.

Explanation / Answer

Height h = 0.7 m

Massm = 79 kg

Velocoity of the victim when it reaches the ground   v= [ 2gh ]

                                                                                       = 3/704 m / s

Final velocity V= 0

Impulse J = m( V - v ) = 292.62 kg m / s

(b). time interval t = 0.078 s

So, force F = J / t

                  = 3751.53 N
