Question
A car moves along a straight east to west road. A coordinatesystem was established on the road with x increasing to the east. The car ends up 14 mi west of the intersection. If thedisplacement was -23 mi how far from the road and from whichdirection did he start? I am having trouble with this problem. I have the netdisplacement and Xf, however, is it the initial value of x that Iam trying to find? Can someone help me out? I am having trouble with this problem. I have the netdisplacement and Xf, however, is it the initial value of x that Iam trying to find? Can someone help me out?Explanation / Answer
the x is positive to the east. let Xo be the origin The car ends up 14 mi west of the intersection, that means that thefinal position is at x=-14 The dispacement was -23 miles, which means the displacement was23miles to the west that means Xo+(-23) = -14, that gives us an Xo of +9 that means that the car started 9mi to the east ofthe intersection
