Question

5. a. Put a qualitative mark(s) on the figure below to show the position(s) where a positive charge +Q would experience a zero net force. Explain your reasoning -2g -q b. Replace the positive charge +Q in part a. with a negative charge -Q. What direction will the force on -Q be at this position (or positions)? To the left, to the right or zero? Explain. 6. Put a qualitative mark (or marks) on the figure below to show the position (or positions) where a positive charge +Q would experience a net force of zero. Explain your reasoning. -2 +q

Explanation / Answer

5)

(a) They want a qualitative mark. This means they just want to know the position, i.e. to the right, left or between the charges. Exact location is not needed.

Opposite charges attract each other.

The two charges in the figure are negative and the test charge +Q is positive.

So, +Q will be attracted by both the charges.

If placed to the left of -2q, the force due to -2q and -q will be to the right (since attracted). Thus they get added and cannot be zero.

Similarly. when placed to the right of -q, force due to each is to the left.

Thus the mark is between the two charges.

In this case, the force due to -2q is to the left and due to -q is to the right; i.e. in opposite directions and thus they can cancel out to be zero resultant.

(b) Zero.

The position is same, just the direction of the forces acting on Q will be reversed.

Now there will be repulsion.

Thus, the force due to -2q is to the rightand due to -q is to the left and once again they cancel out.

6)

With similar explanation, in this case there are two such marks:

One to the left of -2q and one to the right of +q.
