Hi all, For this problem, you should choose "1" for the number(s) with the fewest significant digits. Dr. Cooley NEW Change My settings for this discussion: 1. Display All posts 2. Explanation / Answer
There are three rules on determining how many significant figures are in a number:
1) Non-zero digits are always significant.
2) Any zeros between two significant digits are significant.
3) A final zero or trailing zeros in the decimal portion ONLY are significant.
Using these you can find the number of significant figures in a number. For the given numbers, the number of significant figures are:
300. – 3sf (the zeros are also significant because of the decimal point)
1.245*104 - 4sf ( 1,2,4,5 are the sf)
0.24 – 2sf
300 – 1sf (the zeros are not significant, rule 3)
3.2*103 – 2sf
Ranking:
300. – 4
1.245*104 - 5
0.24 – 2
300 – 1
3.2*103 – 2
