Question

Problems (15 pts total): 1. a) (3 pts) A boy throws a ball straight up and then catches it again. On the axes below draw 3 graphs (just their general shapes) for position vs. time, velocity vs. time and acceleration vs time for the ball's motion, from the moment the ball leaves the boy's hand till he catches it again. Your graphs should only include free fall and not the forces involved in throwing and catching. Assume upwards to be the positive direction. Ignore air resistance. b) (3 pts) Draw 3 graphs again, but this time do not ignore air resistance. a) Ignoring air resistance b) Taking air resistance into account Time (s) Time (s) Time (s) Time (s) Time (s) (6 pts) Consider the fan cart motion along the level track. If the fan is pushing the cart towards

Explanation / Answer

Yes the graphs are correct.

When taking the air resistance into account, all the graphs will have tre same shape. The only difference will be in the value of the 3rd graph i.e the acceleration. It's value will be less than g(9.81). Exact value can't be determined unless some information is provided about the air resistance.

The value decreases because the air resistance opposes the g in both the upward and downward motion.
