Question
A diet heavily promoted a few years ago required the daily intake of “liquid protein” (soup of hydrolyzed gelatin), water, and an assortment of vitamins. All other food and drink were avoided. People on this diet typically lost 10 -14 lb in the first week.A) Opponents of the diet argued that the weight lost was almost entirely due to water loss and would be regained as soon as the normal diet resumed. What is the biochemical basis for this argument? Explain and use examples to support your answers.
B) What types of health risks are associated with this diet? Support your answer with one or more examples.
Explanation / Answer
A) The opponents are right as there is no protein supplement in body. Whenever the body starts getting normal diet the protein in diet will directly be converted to mostly fat rather than energy as the body is used to surviving on low fat diet. This fat will accumulate and will defeat the purpose of dieting. B)Since the diet taken is low in proteins the deficiency of protein in body can lead to diseases relating to protein deficiency like Marasmus which can develop into starvation and cause fatality caused by a lack of essential nutrients. Another such disease is Kwashiorkar. Kwashiorkor is a disease caused by a severe deficiency of protein in diets.
