Question

Part C

Where do the marbles collide given that gravity produces a downward acceleration of g=9.81m/s2? Give the x coordinate.

Express your answer to three significant figures and include appropriate units.

Part D

Where do the marbles collide given that gravity produces a downward acceleration of g=9.81m/s2? Give the y coordinate.

Express your answer to three significant figures and include appropriate units.

Problem 4.69 Two marbles are launched att –0 in the experiment illustrated in the figure below. Marble 1 is launched horizontally with a speed of 4.15 m/s from a heighth = 0.990 m. Marble 2 is launched from ground level with a speed of 5.87 m/ s at an angle e = 45.0% above the horizontal o

Explanation / Answer

Let they collide at height y and distance x and time taken to collide = t

Using equations of motion

s = ut + 0.5gt^2

0.09 - y = 0t + 0.5*9.81t^2 (since vertical velocity of ball thrown from height is 0)

0.09 - y = 4.905t^2 ----- equation 1

y = 5.87*sin45*t - 0.5*9.81*t^2 (vertical velocity of projectile is vsin45)

y = 4.151t - 4.905t^2 ---- equation 2

adding equation 1 and 2

0.09 = 4.151t

t = 0.019 sec

putting this value in equation 1

0.09 - y = 4.905*(0.019)^2

y = 0.088 m

now

x = v*t (v is velocity of ball thrown from height)

x = 4.15*0.019 = 0.078 m
