Question
Two charged parallel metal plates in vacuum are plates are separated by a distance of 15-cm. The electric field between the plates is uniform and has strength of 3000 N/C. An electron is released from rest just inside the negative plates. Please answer the following questions. A. Compute the force that the electric field exerts on the electron. B. Compute the acceleration of the electron as it moves through the field. C. How long will it take the electron to reach the other plate? D. How fast will the electron be going before it crashes into the other plate? E. In which direction will the electron travel in this electric field?Explanation / Answer
4.(A) Fe = q E
Fe = (1.6 x 10^-19) (3000)
Fe = 4.81 x 10^-16 N
(b) a = Fe / m
a = (4.81 x 10^-16) / (9.109 x 10^-31)
a = 5.28 x 10^14 m/s^2
(C) d = v0 t + a t^2 / 2
0.15 = 0 + (5.28 x 10^14) t^2 /2
t = 2.38 x 10^-8 sec
(d) v = v0 + a t
v = 0 + (5.28 x 10^14) (2.38 x 10^-8)
v = 12.6 x 10^6 m/s
(E) opposite to the direction of electric field.
