Question

A football quarterback runs 15 m straight down the playing field in 2.3 s (in the positive direction). He is then hit and shoved 2.5 m straight backwards in 1.5 s. He breaks the tackle and runs straight forward another 19 m in 4.8 s. (a) Calculate the quarterback's average velocity in the horizontal direction during the first interval, in meters per second. (b) Calculate the quarterback's average velocity in the horizontal direction during the second interval, in meters per second. v_2 = 1.7 (c) Calculate the quarterback's average velocity in the horizontal direction during the third interval, in meters per second. (d) Calculate the quarterback's average velocity in the horizontal direction for the entire motion, in meters per second.

Explanation / Answer

a)for the first interval

v1 = 15/2.3 = 6.52 m/s

Hence, v1 = 6.52 m/s

b) for the second interval:

V2 = -2.5/1.5 = -1.67 m/s

Hence, V2 = -1.67 m/s

c) for third interval:

v3 = 19/4.8 = 3.96 m/s

Hence, v3 = 3.96 m/s

d)For the entire motion

Vav = (d1 + d2 + d3 )/(t1 + t2 + t3)

Vav = (15 - 2.5 + 19)/(2.3 + 1.5 + 4.8) = 3.66 m/s

Hence, Vav = 3.66 m/s
