Question

A snow covered ski slope makes an angle of theta_slope = 34.0 degree with the horizontal. When a ski jumper plummets onto the hill, a parcel of splashed snow is thrown up to a maximum displacement of 1.40 m at theta_snow = 20.0 degree from the vertical in the uphill direction as shown in the figure below. (a) Find the component of its maximum displacement parallel to the surface. 1.1 Your response is within 10% of the correct value. This may be due to roundoff error, or you could have a mistake in your calculation. Carry out all intermediate results to at least four-digit accuracy to minimize roundoff error. m (b) Find the component of its maximum displacement perpendicular to the surface. 86 Your response is within 10% of the correct value. This may be due to roundoff error, or you could have a mistake in your calculation. Carry out all intermediate results to at least four-digit accuracy to minimize roundoff error. m

Explanation / Answer

The maximum displacement can be found from

d=1.40 m

Angle of the slope towards the uphill side is given by

=180°-(90°+slope+snow)

  =180°-(90°+36°+22°)

=32°

a)The component of maximum displacement parallel to the surface is given by-

dx=dcos

= 1.40*(cos32)

=1.19 m

b)The component of maximum displacement perpendicular to the surface is

dy=dsin°

1.40*sin(32)

=0.74 m
