Question

A car travels a certain distance along a straight road and on the way must stop at traffic lights and obey the local speed limits. The Figure shows the distance the car travels as function of time. Choose all the correct answers (i.e., B, AC, BCD . . .) which apply to the speed of the car.

A) The speed at 2.6 min is greater than at 2.0 min.
     B) The speed is zero at 0.6 min and 3.7 min.
     C) The speed doesn't change from 3 to 3.7 min.
     D) The speed at 2.3 min is greater than at 6.4 min.
     E) At 2.3 min, the speed is as high as it gets.

1.5 1.25 0.5 0.25 0 5 Time (min

Explanation / Answer

Solution:

a) False , We can simply define it with the help of slope of the distance time graph which gives speed Now at 2.6 min and 2.0 min the graph is having same slope so the speed is same.

b) True, Again the slope of the graph which will give speed is zero at 0.6 min and 3.7 min so it is true.

c) False, if we see the graph from 3 to 3.7 min it is continuosly changing so the slope is not same that implies speed does change in the interval 3 to 3.7 min.

d)True, Again by looking at the graph we can say slope (speed) at 2.3 is greater than speed at 6.4 min

e)Actually here i am not getting the meaning considering that question is asking for maximum speed then it is true. because in the interval 1.5 to around 3 the slope is same and is maximum so it is true.

Answer according to statement. BDE
