Question

Determine if the eq " t = ax + x/t" is dim. correct? Given: t = ax + x/t Determine the units five the constants "A, B, C" in the eq. " x = At + Bq + c. Given x = At + Bq + C Find: Units for constants. An athlete swims the length of A 50m pool in 20s makes the return trip to the starting position in 24s. Determine her average velocity in (A) The first half of the swim (b) The second half (C) the round trip Given: A person travels to work at an Avg. speed of 40 mPh + returns Home at 60 mPh. What is the Avg. Speed? A Jogger runs eastward W a straight line w/ an average speed of 2 m/s for 4 min + then continues w/ an average speed of 1.5 m/s for 2 min. (a) What is her total displacement? (b) What is her avg. Speed for the run? Given: V = 2 m/s t_1 = 240 s

Explanation / Answer

From the given question,

3.1 t = ax + x/t

t=time=T,

a=acceleraton =LT-2

x=displacement =L

t=ax + x/t

T= (LT-2)(L) + (L)/(T)

T = L2T-2 + LT-1

Hence the equation is not dimensionally correct.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3.2   x= At +Ba + C

L= A T + B LT-2 + C

Comparing both sides,

A=LT-1, B=T2, C=L

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3.3 For first half of swim

displacement(x1)= 50m

time(t1)=20 s

velocity= 50/20= 2.5 m/s

For second half of swim

displacement(x2)=50 m

time(t2)=24 s

velocity=50/24=2.1 s

For the round trip

Net displacement=50-50= 0 m

total time= 2.5+2.1=4.6 s

velocity=0/4.6= 0 m/s

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3.4 For forward journey

distance=x

average speed(v1)=40 m/s

time= x/40 s

For backward journey

distance=x

average speed(v2)=60 m/s

time= x/60 s

Average velocity= total distance/total time

=(x+x)/[(x/40)+(x/60)]

=(2x)/[(3x+2x)/120]

=(2x*120)/(5x)

=48 m/s
