Question

After 3 min incubation in -43) cells displayed intense fluorescence (Figure 1A). Figure 1 Temporal pattern of FM(1-43) B fluorescence in cultured cholangiocytes. (mis) FM (1-3) Time mini Figure 2 Membrane surface area is determined by measuring the membrane capacitance. The lipid bilayer serves as an insulator that retards the flow of ions across the membrane. Membrane capacitance is a measure of the charged ions that can be loaded onto a membrane without the charge breeching the barrier. Measured by electrophysigloge patch clamp techniques, the membrane capacitance is direct reflection of the membrane surface area (an increase in membrane surface area an increase in membrane capacitance and vice versa). Time

Explanation / Answer

Observation of figures 1 and 2 provides the idea of rate of membrane recovery by measuring the plasma membrane surface area. Increase in membrane capicitance is directly proportional to increase in membrane surface area. It is evident from figure 1 that the increase in flourescence intensity gives the rate of membrane recovery. In figure 1, it is shown that the flourescence intensity started showing maximum intensity of 100 at 10 minutes. Therefore, the rate of membrane recovery is equvivalent to 10% (100/10) of the plasma membrane surface area per minute. Option C is correct.
