The density of steel is 7.56 times 10^3 kg/m^3. (a) What is the mass of a section 1.25 m long? b) Assume that the atoms are predominantly iron, with atomic mass 55.9 u. How many atoms are there in this section?

Explanation / Answer

Given,

density of steel = rho = 7.56 x 10^3 kg/m^3

a)Density is given by:

density = mass/volume

mass = density x volume

mass = 7.56 x 10^3 [ (0.15 x 0.01 x 1.25) + (0.01 x 1.25 x 0.34) + (0.01 x 1.25 x 0.15) = 60.48 kg

Hence, m = 60.48 kg

b)m = 55.9 amu

m = 60.48 kg = 60480 grams

N = 60480 x 1 mol x 6.023 x 10^23/55.9 x 1 mol = 6.516 x 10^26 atoms

Hence, N = 6.516 x 10^26 atoms.
