Question
Unpolarized light with average intensity of 876 w/m^2 is incident upon the series of three polarizers. The transmission axis of the first polarizer is vertical. The transmission axis of the second polarizer is 15.0 degree counterclockwise from the vertical. The transmission axis of the third polarizer is horizontal. A) Draw each polarizer showing the transmission axis. Show the direction of the polarization of the light after passing through each polarizer. B) Determine the average intensity of the light after passing through the last polarizer. C) Determine the rms values of the electric and magnetic fields of the light after passing through the last polarizer D). Determine the average energy density of the light after passing through the last polarizer.Explanation / Answer
The problem is in part (B). The intensity depends on the square of the cos of the angle between direction of polarizatiom and the polarizer. Do it with cos2 (theta) in stead of cos(theta), then the new values of intensity can be put in our solution and rest all os correct.
