Question
Shown below is a thermodynamic cycle (a to b to c to d to a). In this cycle a monatomic ideal gas goes through an isobaric (constant pressure) process a to b, an isotherm (constant temperature) process b to c, an isochoric (constant volume) process c to d, and an isotherm (constant temperature) process d to a. a) During the process b to c the magnitude of work is 1000 J. Determine the change in internal energy and the value of heat (sign and magnitude) during this process. Explain your answer. b) Determine whether energy as heat is entering or leaving the system during this entire cycle. Explain your answer.Explanation / Answer
(a)
Process b-c : This is isentropic expansion process.
W = 1000 J ( given )
Q = U + W
Q= 0 ,
So J = -W = -1000 J
(b)
During Process (a-b) Heat is added to the system at constant pressure.
Qin= cp(Tb-Ta)
During Process (c-d) Hat is removed from the system at constant volume.
Wnet= Qin-Qout.
i.e. Qout = Qin- Wnet
