Question
All individuals, regardless of fitness level, require a resting cardiac output of approximately 5 L/min. Zeke, a relatively inactive college student, has an average resting heart rate of 74 bpm, while Mina, a marathon runner, has an average resting heart rate of 53 bpm. Calculate the stroke volume at rest for both Zeke and Mina. Blood plasma contains proteins. Most of those proteins are produced by the liver. Normally, those proteins are not removed from blood during the formation of urine (normal urine does not contain much protein). However, certain liver and kidney disorders can lead to a below-normal amount of protein in blood plasma. Explain how having too few plasma proteins leads to systemic edema.Explanation / Answer
4. Cardiac output is the amount of blood heart pumps in one minute which is equal to 5L or 5000 ml
The relationship between cardiac output, stroke volume and heart rate is given as :
Cardiac output = heart rate × stroke volume
So for zeke stroke volume = 5000 / 74 = 67.57 ml
And for mina stroke volume = 5000/ 53 = 94.34 ml
