Question

1.Define cytotoxicity and cell viability.

2.Name three pathways or methods of cell death, as well as two "non-death" cytotoxic effects cells may experience.

3.What are a few limitations of in vitro assessment of cell viability or cytotoxicity?

4.Define and describe the following classes of cell viability assays; give an example of each:

i.cytolysis or membrane leakage assays

ii.mitochondrial activity (caspase assays)

iii.functional assays

iv.genomic or proteomic assays

5.How can Trypan blue be used to estimate cell viability while counting on a hemocytometer?

6.Briefly, explain the theoretical premise of how the Live / Dead assay works.

Please answer the questions fully before i'd rate it. Thanks

Explanation / Answer

1.Cytotoxicity means being toxic to cells. Whenever the cells get treated with cytotoxic agents, it undergoes necrosis or may loose membrane integrity or undergo lysis.

Cell viability is the determination of of dead or living cells , based on a total cell samole. Cell viability calculations are used to determine and evaluate the life or death of cancerous cells and rejection of implanted organs if any.
