With V = 0 at infinity, what are the finite (a) positive and (b) negative values of x at which the net electric potential on the x axis is zero? (a) Number (b) Number Click if you would like to show work for this q_ion: emsoew Question Attempts: O of 1 used SAVE POR LATER Copyright 2017 by ohn WileyExplanation / Answer
Net Electric potential is, V = kq1/r1 + kq2/r2
Factor out k since it appears in both terms
0 = 7e/x - 18e/(0.264 - x) where x is the net electric potential zero point on the x axis between the two charges that are 0.264 m apart.
7e/x = 18e/(0.264 - x) => 7e*(0.264 - x) = 18e*x => 1.848e - 7ex = 18ex => 1.848e = 25ex => x = 0.0739 m
Now look for V = 0 on negative x axis. Let x be the distance to the left of the origin
0 = 7e/x -18e/(0.264+x) => 7e*(0.264+x) = 18e*x => 1.848e + 7ex = 18ex => 1.848e = 11ex => x = 0.168 m left from the origin.
V = 0 at a) 0.0739 m and
b) - 0.168 m
