Question

7. You have been called in to settle a debate. A small town ina rather windy area would like to use that wind to supply electricity to the town. AMCE has provided a prototype windmill so the city engineers could conduct some on site tests. One of the city's engineers has estimated that the prototype would supply about half of the present elctrical need. She suggests that the city install the windmill atop a nearby hillside where the average wind speed is twice as large as the original test site wind speed. Another city engineer points out that there will be additional costs that need to be considered in building the site remotely. According to his calculations, the hillside installation would cost as much as a second windmill. He suggests that the city just install a second windmill at the test site. The ACME represntative confirms both sets of calculations. Help the mayor decide which option would be best for the city.

8. A popular complaint about wind power is that "windmills kill a lot of birds." What are your thoughts on this criticism? To answer this question, do some investigation and cite your sources.

Explanation / Answer

Q7.

let required power is P.

at present site, the windmill is generating P/2.

as power of a wind mill is directly proportional to cube of the speed of wind, if the wind mill is placed on the hill side, then power generated will be 2^3*(P/2)=4*P

which will have a lot of redundant power without decrease in installation cost.

having 2 windmills at the same site will generate the required power P and having two will also help in one serving as back up if another needs any type of maintenance.

so having two instllations at the same test site would be a better idea.
